About the Folk Artist

I have always struggled with the notion that I am an artist. I have no problem saying that I am artistic, but an artist? I remember the first time I was struck with something that had to do with art. We were crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a military transport on our way home from Europe and there was a person who was drawing Mickey Mouse for the children. Being a child myself at the time, I sat and watched him for hours as he drew and shaded in pencil. I think I probably said to myself, "I can do that." And so I tried to draw.

As I grew older I took a sketchpad with me as I traveled and drew what I saw around me. In my early twenties I started doing a lot of pen and ink drawings. I loved the world of wild animals of the west and the lives of mountain men and Indians. So this is what I drew. I traded some of my drawings. I sold a few, but I gave a lot away. This was the time in my life that I realized how good it felt to have someone like something that I had created.

Over the years I have continued dabbling. I am constantly thinking of creative ideas I would like to be able to turn into reality. When one works full time to provide for a family it is hard to find time for the creative side. My main focus now is creating these Folk Art Houses. There is a lot more demand for them now and people seem to really enjoy them. But I also still draw, carve basswood Santas and figurines, sculpt polymer clay Santas and theme figurines with bears. My wife Pam says I need to just pick one thing and stick with it. I can't. If I get the "I can do that" idea in my head then eventually off I'll go and do it.

Let me say a little more about the Folk Art Houses. It all started with an idea, even though the first idea I had was not about birdhouses. It all sort of evolves. My Creations went from All Stone Pieces to Stone and Driftwood to Barnwood and Stone and then on to Lamps and other functional items. (You can see these first Folk Art pieces on the second page of the gallery.) That is how it all started.

Each Folk Art House is very personal to me. I have literally touched and handled each and every piece that goes onto every Folk Art House. I have never stopped to count all the pieces in each house, but I do know that there are hundreds. Each piece is a part of me and has a special meaning to me. I hope you will be able to get a sense of that feeling, as they become a part of your home and life.

Thank you for your interest in what we are trying to do here.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. Enjoy!
